Creator/Contributor:

Bruce, Robert D., 1934-, author.

Abstract:

Includes 44 photographic prints taken in June of 1956 by philosopher and mathematician Charles Musès and his associates, documenting a group of Lacandon Indians of Lago Naha (in Southern Chiapas, Mexico), their dwellings and handicrafts, natural surroundings at the lake, and a Lacandon ceremony. Individuals depicted in the images, as identified in annotations, include Chank'in (a chieftain), Mateo, Kintin, Jose and a Tzetal local, in addition to Charles Musès, John Harju (editor of Musès' Falcon's Wing Press) and their travelling associates. Also includes 28 larger-format reproductions of a selection of these prints. Also includes a 17-page report by Robert Bruce, dated September 16, 1957, addressed to Harju at the Barth Foundation, soliciting continued funding for Bruce's study of the Lacandon. The report largely pertains to Bruce's interactions with the Lacandon in March of 1957, with a focus on his observations of their religion.
